SMSC, British Values and Protected Characteristics
At Worth Primary School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain.
We are committed to creating an inclusive, respectful and welcoming community in which every child feels valued, develops a strong sense of belonging and is supported to thrive. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is embedded across our curriculum and wider school life and underpins our approach to promoting the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Alongside this, pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of the protected characteristics within the Equality Act 2010, learning to recognise, respect and celebrate the diversity of people, families, cultures and communities. These principles are woven purposefully through subjects including PSHE, RE, English, history and the wider curriculum, and are enriched through assemblies, pupil voice and leadership, educational visits, visitors, clubs, celebrations, charitable activities and links with the local and wider community. Opportunities for SMSC development encourage pupils to reflect on their own beliefs and experiences, develop curiosity about the world around them, understand right and wrong, appreciate different perspectives and cultures, build positive relationships and contribute responsibly to their community. Through everyday interactions and carefully planned learning and enrichment experiences, pupils learn to challenge stereotypes and discrimination, understand their rights and responsibilities, express their views respectfully and demonstrate kindness, fairness and respect towards others.
In this way, SMSC, British values, equality and an understanding of protected characteristics are not taught in isolation but are embedded within the culture, curriculum and daily life of Worth Primary School, helping to prepare pupils to become confident, compassionate and responsible citizens who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.
In particular we aim, by learning together, to:
- Develop a love of learning and a desire to continue building on skills and knowledge throughout our lives. Make learning fun.
- Teach children to think for themselves and develop an enquiring mind by providing a safe and secure environment.
- Encourage emotional development through the support and care shown by others in school. Nurture.
- Encourage mutual respect. Help people to learn to live together in a community, showing sensitivity to the differences between each other. Culturally and morally inclusive.
- Help all children to become responsible independent people who are able to look at and think deeply about the world around them, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
- Widen experiences in order to raise aspirations.
- Involve parents as partners in learning and work together as a team.
